1. The History of Massage

Massage is one of the most popular treatments in the spa. Massages have been known for a long time. Massage is our natural response to pain, massage is the use of hands or mechanical means to affect the body's soft tissues and specific muscles. The word massage has many origins:

1. The Arabic verb "masse" means "touch"
2. The Greek word "massein" means "knead"
3. The French word "masser" means "to massage".

Massage is an effective means of relaxation, healing and the use of massage therapy can be traced back to previous civilizations:

Massage has been practiced in China since 3000 BC. There is a very popular treatment here: the "Amma", which means pressure points. In Japan, a very popular treatment is pressure points and they call this technique Shiatsu, the scriptures in India (Atharvaveda) mention that massage treatments are very good for the body.

Ayurveda treatments are very popular here, they use some oils and herbs for aromatherapy and healing.
Massage is also very common in Greek culture. Here it was often used before and after games to relieve pain and bruises. The massages were administered by doctors and priests.

The art of massage was also widespread in Rome and was practiced by many physiotherapists. A popular form of treatment was based on diet, massage, wine, pleasurable drugs, and bathing.

During the Middle Ages, there was a decline in the use of massage as a therapy, as well as many of the medical and physical practices that had been used by then.

With the end of the fourteenth century came the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance. The Renaissance brought with it many great discoveries in the arts and sciences. Massage became unpopular when Europe was overwhelmed by conservative and repressive religious dogma.

In the nineteenth century, the most common treatments for disease were blood deprivation and the use of laxatives. Physicians put their faith in science, and new drugs such as calomel, mercury- and arsenic-based tonics, were in use.

Ling formalized a set of gymnastic movements and massage techniques that came to be known as Swedish massage. These techniques included:

  • "effleurage" or stroking,
  • "petrissage" or pressing and squeezing, and
  • "tapotement" or stroking.

Ling is considered the father of modern massage.

2. Principles of Massage

Massage uses pressure to promote venous and lymphatic flow back to the heart. It is therefore important that the movement is always in this direction so that excessive pressure is not exerted on the closed veins.

Posture

The ability to give a good massage depends on our comfort. Therefore, good posture is beneficial for both you and your client. The following are just basic guidelines for achieving good posture:
Keep your back as straight as possible. By bending your hips and knees, you're able to move efficiently with little strain on your back.
Foot position is also important and should be such that you can move along your client's body without undue strain on your back.

Hand Position

The most useful areas of the hand are the bottom edge and the base of the thumb.
Other important areas are the palm and the tips of the fingers and thumbs.
Keep your arms and hands relaxed as you massage, allowing the hands to conform to the guest's body contours.
Always pour the oil into your own hands, never directly on the customer.
Warm up the oil (and your hands) before applying it to bare skin.

Physical Contact

Always maintain contact with your customer. This allows him to relax, especially when lying face down. A break in contact can also be understood as the end of the massage.
When we touch the customer, we transmit our energy. Massage is about the transfer of energy from the therapist to the guest. Before starting the massage, we protect ourselves from bad energy (tired, moody, tense, etc.) with a short meditation.
If for any reason we have to stop contact and treatment, for example, due to an external disturbance, tuck the client in. Never leave him alone uncovered.

3. The 5 Main Movements

1. Effleurage

Effleurage is a light or deeper stroking motion with the palms of relaxed hands or with the fingertips. The pressure is increased towards the heart and begins with no pressure moving back to the starting point, and maintaining body contact continuously. This is a deeply relaxing form of massage. This movement is used to begin and end each massage.

Application:

It is mainly used at the beginning and end of the massage sequence.
It is also used as a connecting stroke.

2. Petrissage

Petrissage is an application of firm pressure to the tissue with strong pressure on the tissue. This movement relieves muscle tension, fatigue, and stiffness.

Application:

Effleurage is usually applied at the beginning of the massage.
Treatment techniques include kneading, wringing, and rolling

Types of PETRISAGE:

These techniques are lively and stimulating strokes. There are 3 types of this technique:

a. Kneading

It is a set movement to pick up, roll, wring, stretch, and knead the body's muscle tissue. During kneading, the muscle is gently lifted from the bones, stretched, and then alternately squeezed and released.

b. Wrestling

Wrestling is the simultaneous movement of pulling pushing and pushing the muscle.

c. Pichick up

Pick-up is the technique that picks up the muscle with alternative hands. Skin rolling is a manipulation technique using the thumb to squeeze the muscle and the index and third fingers to pull and roll the skin deep into the muscle. Muscle rolling is a manipulation technique in which the muscle is lifted (kneaded) from the bone. The same goes for rolling the skin, but the therapist focuses more on the muscle. This method is used to focus on specific problem areas. This is a firm friction and heat generation technique, using the palm of your hand to compress tissue against bone when used on small muscles. It is a method used for focusing on a specific problem area.

3. Cupping

Cupping is performed by forming loose cups with the hands, which then tap the area of the body to be massaged, making a very loud clapping sound.

4. Hacking

Hacking is a very quick and easy movement. The hands face each other but do not touch and the hands are at right angles to the wrist.

Beating

The beating can be slow or fast, depending on the type of effect you want to achieve. The hands are held loosely and are dropped with the arm at shoulder height onto the guest's body.

Pounding

The pounding is done with the outer edges of the hands, keeping the hands loose but closed.

Application

It is used as a wake-up punch.
It can be used towards the end of treatment.

5. Vibration

This is a pain treatment that clears nerve pathways and helps relieve tension in muscles.

Application

When muscles are extremely tight and do not respond to petrissage or friction.

4. Other Types of Messages

Hot Stone Therapy

At the beginning of hot stone therapy, smooth basalt stones heated in a water bath are carefully placed on the body parts to be treated. This direct heat relaxes the muscles, resulting in the massage itself being even more effective and intense than usual. The size of the stones varies depending on which part of the body they are used on. The stones are coated in scented oil to increase relaxation and calm.

Deep Tissue Massage

The Deep Tissue Massage does what it says: "to the point". It is a massage technique that acts on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Similar to Swedish massage, deep tissue massage uses slower and firmer strokes and pressure than other treatments. Deep finger pressure focuses on specific areas and follows or goes over the fibers of muscles and tendons.

AYURVEDA

The word Ayurveda was formed by combining two words: Ayu and Veda Ayu means the knowledge dealing with Ayu or life.
Ayu is also formed by combining the suffix A and the root verb Yuja. The suffix A conveys the meaning of whole or beginning to end and the root verb Yuja means to join or combine. Therefore, the full word Ayu means that individuals go through the entire cycle of life from birth to death.
Veda was derived from the root verb. Vida means to know, to receive, and to exist. Therefore, the whole word Ayurveda encompasses a wide range of meanings, including knowledge of life, taking advantage of life, and sustaining life. Therefore, Ayurveda is intended to gain knowledge that deals with life and lays the foundation for achieving and attaining a good purpose, balanced existence, and the preservation of life.

Oils, lotions, and powders help hands glide easily over the skin. Oils Vegetable oils such as grapeseed oil, almonds, and avocado are among the most commonly used oils because they are easily absorbed by the skin. It can be difficult at first to decide how much oil we have used for a massage. This depends on the body and also on the hair on the body. For a normal body, we used 20-30ml of massage oil. Too much oil can prevent good hand control, while a little oil can irritate the skin by pulling your hair.

MASSAGE CREAM

Massage cream is usually a medium for beauty treatments. For example, hand and foot massage during manicure and pedicure. Facial massage during a facial treatment is also recommended with a cream. Massage cream: should be chosen for its slow absorption rate, allowing a five to ten-minute massage to be performed without the need to apply more cream.
